CONTEXT π
Letβs build the bridge to Jesus.
1 Samuel 15:22 wasnβt just a warning for Saul. Itβs a window into what God has always wanted and what Jesus perfectly fulfilled.
βTo obey is better than sacrifice.β
This verse is the turning point of Saulβs life. And it sets the stage for a new kind of king.
Saul offered a sacrifice to cover disobedience.
Jesus offered obedience as the sacrifice.
Saul said, βLook what I saved to give to God.β
Jesus said, βNot my will, but Yours be done.β
Saul spared the best for himself.
Jesus gave His best for us.
And the failure of Saul in 1 Samuel 15 sets off a chain reaction.
God rejects him and starts preparing someone different: βa man after His own heart.β
That man is the giant-slaying, Psalm-writing, sin-wrought, and repentant King David. But David is not the destination.
Heβs a preview. A shadow.
Because even Davidβs obedience was flawed. Even Davidβs reign would be stained by sin.
So the story keeps moving forward.
And eventually, a greater King shows up.
One not only after Godβs heart, but of Godβs heart.
29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.β
19 So Jesus said to them, βTruly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
Where Saul failed, Jesus obeyed.
Fully and completely.
Thatβs why I donβt just read 1 Samuel 15:22 as a warning, but also as a signpost.
It points to the One who didnβt offer God livestock or leftovers.
It points to the One who offered His very life.

APPLY AND RESPOND πββ
Deep down, I think we all want more from our faith than the easy version:
Go to church
Read your Bible
Be nice
Donβt mess up too badly
Now, these things matter. Theyβre foundational.
But letβs be honest: in many of our contexts, they donβt require full surrender.
They donβt demand our heart.
But 1 Samuel 15 β and really, the whole of Scripture β shows us that God is after much more than a few hours on Sunday:
He wants trust when the job falls through or your heart gets broken.
He wants surrender when it would be easier to take control and do it your way.
He wants a heart like Jesusβ when yours is screaming for attention, validation, or revenge.
So letβs start imagining:
What would it look like to obey God completely today?
Talk with a trusted friend about where youβve been holding back full obedience and trust.

ANSWER KEY β
Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
