Connecting to Other Parts of Scripture 📖

1 Timothy 4:12 highlights the importance of setting a godly example, regardless of age.

This principle resonates throughout Scripture, demonstrating the power of a faithful life.

12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

Here are some examples…

Youth in Action:

In Jeremiah 1, God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet despite his youth:

“But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.”

Jeremiah 1:7

Consider how Jeremiah’s faithfulness from a young age set a powerful example and impacted generations.

Exemplary Conduct:

In Titus 2, Paul instructs Titus on the importance of living a life that others can emulate:

7 “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness

8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”

Titus 2:7-8

This echoes the call to be exemplary in all areas of life, reinforcing the message of 1 Timothy 4:12.

Living by Faith:

In Hebrews 11, the essence of faith is beautifully described:

1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

This foundational verse on faith supports the directive in 1 Timothy 4:12 to be an example in faith, showing confidence in God’s promises.

The Gospels ✝️

In the gospels, we see that Jesus came not only to take our place on the cross, but also to show us an example of how to live a life that honors God and points others to him.

21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22 ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’

23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”

1 Peter 2:21-23

The biblical call to live exemplary lives is clear.

By embodying godly speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, believers can profoundly impact those around them and honor God in every aspect of life.

May we become people who:

  1. Embrace the call to be examples in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.

  2. Reflect on the powerful examples provided in Scripture and strive to emulate them in our daily lives through the power of the Holy Spirit

That is what should come to mind when memorizing our verse this week.

The Power of Christlike Conduct 🙏

There’s a reason my dad used to always say to me and my siblings:

Monkey see, monkey do.

Monkey family shot during a trek at Matheran, MH, India

As children (and as adults), we learn through the example of others in so many areas of our lives.

Yes, we learn from what people tell us, but we learn even more by what people show us with their actions.

Here’s Paul in his letter to the church at Philippi:

17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

Philippians 3:17

No matter how old you are, you are called to live a life that others can look to as a model of Christlike behavior.

Representing God to all of creation was our original call as image bearers!

Apply: Be Intentional in Setting an Example 🏃

  1. 🗣️ Speech: Commit to speaking words that build others up. Avoid gossip, harsh words, or anything unwholesome. If someone looked at a transcript of everything you say, would they see Jesus reflected?

  2. 👟 Conduct: Do your actions match your words? Demonstrate honesty, kindness, and humility in your daily interactions.

  3. ❤️ Love: Show love to everyone, especially your enemies. This can be through acts of service, kind words, or simply being present for someone in need.

  4. 🕊️ Faith: Cultivate a deep and abiding faith. Spend time in prayer, study the Bible, and trust God in all circumstances. Let your faith be evident in your responses to life’s challenges.

  5. ☀️ Purity: Guard your heart and mind against impurity. Make choices about what you consume (news, tv shows, movies, music, etc.) that make you more like Jesus. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

💡 Take Action: Choose one idea from above to focus on today.

The key is to invite the Holy Spirit to work from the inside out. Over time, your example will shine brightly and inspire others to follow Christ.
