The Mountain of God 🏔️

We’ve covered Peter’s “virtue list” he shares with the early church to assure them in their “calling and election.”

In v18 of the same chapter, Peter later describes being a witness of Christ on the “holy mountain.”

…we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

2 Peter 1:18

The “mountain of God” is an image that pops up nearly everywhere in Scripture, most often referring to Jerusalem/Mt. Zion.

By reminding the early church of his personal witness to Christ’s transfiguration on Mt. Tabor, Peter cements his authority and credibility to teach the early church that Jesus IS in fact the prophesied Messiah.

This then supports Peter’s encouragement of confirming Jesus’ return, contrary to what false teachers were saying at the time.

To put it simply:

Peter experienced the goodness and glory of God in person.

So it’s his job to point the church to the truth and encourage them with the truth.

In the same way, we (who have also experienced the goodness of God and power of Jesus) have the authority to point others to Jesus 👇️

Apply & Respond: Writing Out Your Testimony ✍️

Peter’s testimony points to Christ’s power and promise.

1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,

by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Peter 1:1–4

When was the last time you wrote down your testimony?

If you haven’t, here’s a great place to start:

  • Before: What was life like before Jesus? What was your deepest need or struggle?

  • Giving Your Life to Christ: Was there a season or moment you gave your life to Christ? What was that experience like?

  • Spiritual Growth: What's different now because of Jesus? How have you grown? What kind of experiences did He help you navigate?

Now that you have it written down, you’re ready for tomorrow where we’ll talk about sharing it!

Pray 🙏

Lord, thank you that I have a testimony that points others to Your Son Jesus.

What a blessing it is to know you and your love for me. Today, let me sit in gratitude for what you have done for me and how you’ve brought me to where I am now. You are good, Lord.

Amen 🙏

Feedback ❤️

You're helping put the puzzle pieces together that are all over the Bible, and can often require Bible classes to help understand what's going on. What a blessing! Thank you SOOO very much!

I love how you give the history, it really helps give context to what is going on. I also love how you bring the situation home and personalize it. Today’s reading was very helpful in reminding me who am I trusting in, God or man.

Thank you so much for what you do, the research you put into these readings, the time spent in prayer, the editing, etc. I am very blessed by your ministry. Thank you!

Answer key

For this reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,

and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,

and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

2 Peter 1:5–7

Have a blessed Thursday ✌️
