A review of what we’ve learned 🤔
Here’s a quick recap of what we’ve learned this week:
Background Context
Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in Colossae, a church likely founded by Epaphras, one of Paul's fellow missionaries.
Passage Context:
Some of Paul’s goals in writing to the Colossians include:
Declaring the supremacy of Christ and reinforcing his teachings (Col 1:15-20)
Promoting unity (Col 1:9-14) and strengthening their faith & hope (Col 1:21-23)
Protecting the church from false teachings (Col 2:16-23)
Giving instructions for Christian living (Col 3)
Colossians 3:1 is where Paul transitions from “avoid false teachings” to a “put on the new self.”
Original Greek 🤓
The Greek word for ‘seek’ (zēteō) is the same word used in Matthew 6:33 (“seek first the Kingdom…”).
To seek something means to both desire it and to actively look for it
Things Above 👆️
“Things that are above” is a phrase repeated in verses 1 and 2 of Colossians 3.
Things above:

→ Seek out music, media, relationships, habits and more that make us more like Jesus and nudge us to focus on the Kingdom of God.
The Right Hand 👑
Jesus being at the “right hand” of the Father means He:
Fulfilled prophecy and completed the work the Father gave Him to do (past)
Intercedes for us (present)
Will rule completely when He returns (future)

Made for Another World 🌎️
Most people who don’t know Jesus go about their lives believing that this earthly, temporary life is all there is —
— void of true meaning, significance and purpose.
But at the same time, they know deep down that there must be more.
One of my all-time favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis is this:
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
Earlier this week, I encouraged you to “set your mind on eternity.”
Today (and this weekend), I challenge you to look for an opportunity to help someone else do the same.
People are more open to talking about topics like this than we think.
We just need to take the leap of faith to start the conversation.
The best part?
We don’t have to “convert them” or have all of the answers.
We get to plant seeds, and trust the Holy Spirit to work.
Practice: Share 🗣️
This weekend, seek an opportunity to talk to someone you know about eternity.
Asking questions can be a great place to start:
Do you ever think about eternity? Do you think anything exists beyond this finite life?
What do you think happens when you die?
As the conversation progresses, share the biblical perspective.
Share why Jesus came: so that He could spend eternity with them.
To “make everything sad come untrue” and put this broken world back together.
🤔 Challenge: Remember: This is too good of news to not share!

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above,
where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
