The power of imitation 🧔 🪞 🧔
Yesterday, we saw how verse 7 instructs us to teach God’s commands to our children by talking about them..
🍽️ When you sit in your house (open up conversation at the dinner table or on the couch)
🚗 When you walk by the way (when you’re driving your kids around)
🛏️ When you lie down (bedtime stories and prayers)
☀️ When you rise (at the breakfast table)
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
We also talked about the power of a conversation that goes beyond 7 minutes of surface level talk.
Today, let’s talk about the aspect of teaching that isn’t done with words.
Kids (and even adults) tend to do what they see more than what they’re told. As the wise saying goes, monkey see, monkey do.
It’s one thing to talk about “Christian things” with our kids, but it’s another thing to model it as an example.
The danger of not walking the walk
Speaking of His commands in verse 8, God instructs the Israelites to..
Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
“Binding them as a sign on your hand” was a practice where Israelites would wear box-like containers on their hands or forehead containing certain parts of the Torah in them.
These were called tefillin or phylacteries and were a sign of covenant relationship and obedience.
In Matthew 23, Jesus calls out the hypocrisy of teaching the “right things” with a heart of pride:
2“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, 3 so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice…
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long
The Pharisees carried God’s Word in their phylacteries (like it says in Deut 6:8), but they failed to live it out. To which Jesus says, “Woe to you!”
As we continue meditating on Deuteronomy 6:7, let’s remember that talking about the Way of Jesus is necessary and good…but we can’t stop there.
The next generation needs godly examples of men and women who trust and obey God!
Application: Be imitateable 🙏
Do you remember the first time you ever had someone pray for you in-person, with their hand on your shoulder?
It’s a blessing to experience the love and care of someone you know through prayer.
Not only is it a way to actively love and encourage somebody, it also acts as an example - it also sets and example for our children to follow.
Practice
If you have children, find an opportunity to pray for one of them individually, with your hand on their shoulder. This could be at the dinner table, in the car before you go into the grocery store or right before bed.
If you don’t have children, do this for someone in a generation that is younger than you.
This simple act can be a blessing to you and the one you pray for. 🙏
