🗣️ Original Hebrew: ‘Love’ + ‘Teach your children’
We’re only memorizing verse 7, but we also need to look at the surrounding verses to get the full picture.
(And if you’re not a parent, don’t worry - there’s plenty in this passage for you)
In verse 5, God gives the overarching command to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might.”
💡 Note: Verse 5 is what Jesus references in response to the Pharisee that asks, “what is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:37)
The Hebrew word for ‘love’ as used here is really communicating covenantal commitment, not the ‘emotional love’ or casual love that gets thrown around today
(so think more marriage-type love, less “I love pizza” love 🍕)
This love is better expressed as devotion - absolute loyalty and obedience.
The 10 commandments were written on stone, but now, let’s move into specific commands that God wanted written on the hearts of His people.
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
In verse 7, God tells his people to ‘teach’ his commands to their children.
The root Hebrew verb here (šānan) is associated with the word ‘sharp’ - it essentially means to “engrave” or “teach incisively.”
the image here is of something being etched on the heart of the next generation
In other words, etch and write God’s commands onto the hearts of your bēn
What if I don’t have kids?
The Hebrew word (bēn) is used throughout Scripture to mean child, grandchild, young or member of a group
So even if you don’t have children yourself, the command is still relevant.
The command is for us to intentionally disciple the generation(s) coming up behind us.
Apply & respond 🏃♂️
It’s worth noting that verse 6 comes before verse 7…Before we can teach our children God’s commands, they must first be written on our hearts.
As the sayings go, you can’t give what you don’t have. And you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Reflect
How full is my cup? Do I have something I can pour into the next generation?
What’s the name of one youth in my life who God is calling me to pour into?
