Original Greek: “Take my yoke upon you..”
The Greek word for yoke in verse 29 is zygos (pronounced zoo-gahs).
..take my yoke upon you and learn from me…
What is a yoke? (2 meanings)
Literally, it’s a wooden cross piece fastened over the necks of two farm animals and attached to a plow or cart. It’s a work instrument.
Metaphorically, a yoke also symbolized a burden or a set of responsibilities.
In first-century Judaism, a yoke was a metaphor for a rabbi’s interpretation and application of the Torah. So every rabbi had a “yoke” that they expected their students to live by.
Speaking of the Pharisees, Jesus says later in Matthew 23:4:
They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.
To “take Jesus’ yoke upon you” is to submit under his authority, just as a farm animal is under the yoke of the farmer.
It means giving Jesus control and choosing to obey his teachings and live his way of life (holiness, radical forgiveness, self-sacrificial love).
Apply & respond 🏃♂️
In this passage, Jesus is not talking about giving you a vacation and time off. After all, a yoke is an instrument for work.
He’s offering a different way of life that leads to freedom and rest that comes when we surrender and choose to obey him.
Reflect
What is one area of your life where Jesus is inviting you into obedience?
