Jesus & Jeremiah 6:16 📕

As we explored two weeks ago when we memorized Matthew 4:4, Jesus often quoted Scripture.

In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus seems to be picking up on language from Jeremiah 6:16, which says:

This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
 ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls..”

Again, we see this idea of “finding rest for your souls” connected to obedience: or walking in the “good way” or the “ancient path.”

🤯 Note: In Jeremiah, the Lord says that rest will come from walking in the way.

During his ministry, Jesus says, “I am the Way.” “Come to me and you will find rest for your souls.”

Most other major religions invite their people to a set of beliefs, or even a “path” they should walk.

As Christians, though, more than being invited to a path, we are invited to a person.

And his name is Jesus.

Apply & respond 🏃‍♂️

Both the Old and New Testaments show us the connection between obedience and rest.

When we surrender and obey God, there is a sense of peace and spiritual rest that follows - a kind of rest that doesn’t require us to be on vacation.

Practice

Read Jesus’ teachings in Matthew Chapter 5 or 6 this week and identify one step you can take in obedience to the Way of Jesus.

Bonus: Read it out loud with a friend, your family or small group.

Wisdom 🧐

“Come; he drives none away; he calls them to himself. His favorite word is ‘Come.’ Not, go to Moses – ‘Come unto me.’

To Jesus himself we must come, by a personal trust. Not to doctrine, ordinance, nor ministry are we to come first; but to the personal Saviour.”

Charles Spurgeon

Answer key

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
