Jesus’ Authority + Every Nation 🌏
Our memory verse isn’t just “famous last words” before Jesus’ death.
These are some of the last words after Jesus had already died!
After the Sabbath after Jesus’ crucifixion, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
They found it empty, and the angel tells them plainly:
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”
Notice what the angel instructs the women to do: pass on news of Jesus’ resurrection.
Why?
Because Jesus’ resurrection is the most important event in the history of the cosmos.
It means Jesus has all authority — even authority over death!
Before Jesus lays out his final command to his disciples to go, baptize, and teach, he first makes one thing very clear:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
That’s why we find a “therefore” at the beginning of verse 19 —
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…
The Great Commission is rooted in Jesus’ authority!
Jesus is King of Heaven and Earth. He conquered death and He has a right to set the task ahead.
And with that authority, he declares that his reign must be announced to every square inch of the globe.
There is no place that is not under the authority of Jesus.
There is no place where the Good News of Jesus is not needed.
In life and death, in heaven and on earth, Jesus is King.
Apply & Respond: We Are All Missionaries 🗣️
Because Jesus’ Kingdom is universal, the Gospel must go out to the whole world.
And each follower of Christ is given this mandate.
In fact, you are only Jesus’ disciple precisely because of the people who obeyed this command over the last 2000 years!
Not everyone is called to travel as a missionary to Poland, Peru, or Pakistan.
But we are ALL called to tell our neighbors, coworkers, and community about Jesus until the whole world knows and obeys the commands of Christ.
Reflect 🤔
What do you feel when you think about our mandate to go and tell other people about Jesus? Fear? Nerves? Joy? Confusion? Energy?
Do you resist evangelism and telling people about Jesus? Have you seen a prime opportunity and passed it by?
Or do you feel that it’s better for the world to have more disciples of Jesus who know his commands? Do you believe that Jesus’ Kingdom is for everyone, even the worst sinner or the one who seems to already have it all together?
Have you embraced your identity as a disciple of Jesus charged with making more disciples? Do you believe this is what Jesus wants for all of us?
If not, what are you waiting for?
👀 Throughout the rest of the week, we’ll talk about practical tools to help us share the gospel wherever we go.
