Happy Monday, {{first_name | everyone}}!
Mother’s Day was yesterday in the United States - Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms (especially mine, who is a loyal Malachi Daily reader 🫶), grandmas and mother figures in our community.
While mothers should be celebrated all the time, it’s nice to have a special day to remember their unique love and sacrifice! This week, our memory verse is centered on women who fear of the Lord.

CONTEXT 📕
Proverbs can sometimes feel…different than reading other parts of Scripture. Well, it’s for good reason. Proverbs is wisdom literature. Rather than a chronological narrative, it’s a collection of short, memorable sayings meant to impart wisdom for daily living.
And when we understand how these sayings function within Israel’s wisdom tradition and where the book fits in the broader story of Scripture, it takes on new layers of depth.
Authors: The book is traditionally associated with Solomon, the son of David. Proverbs 1:1 opens with, “The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.” However, the book also includes collections from other wise figures, such as “the wise” (Proverbs 22:17), Agur (Proverbs 30:1), and King Lemuel (Proverbs 31:1).
Date: The collection likely started being compiled early in Israel’s kingdom, with the final compilation coming later, possibly during the reign of Hezekiah.
Audience: Proverbs seems primarily written for young people in Israel, especially those preparing for leadership and responsible adulthood. But it addresses anyone seeking wisdom, calling readers to pursue a life shaped by the fear of the Lord.
Cultural Context: In the ancient Near East, wisdom literature was a common genre, but Israel’s wisdom tradition is distinct in its theological grounding. Wisdom is not merely about practical skills. It is ultimately rooted in covenant relationship with God. As Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” Wisdom, therefore, is both moral and relational.
Purpose: Proverbs serves as a guide for living skillfully and righteously in God’s world. It teaches readers how to navigate everyday life — from speech, relationships, work, justice, to self-control — under God’s authority. The book has several major themes:
The Fear of the Lord: True wisdom begins with reverence for God, shaping all aspects of life.
The Way of Wisdom vs. Folly: There are two paths - one leading to life and flourishing, the other to destruction.
Speech and Conduct: Words and actions reveal the heart and have lasting consequences.
Community and Justice: Wisdom involves right relationships, honesty, and care for others, especially the vulnerable.
Israel lived among cultures that often equated success with power, wealth, or status. In Proverbs, however, “success” is not defined by outward appearance or achievements, but by a life rooted in reverence for God.
The people of God are to measure their lives not by worldly standards, but by their relationship with the Lord.
Excited to dig into our memory with you this week!
APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃♂
📖 Read: To prepare for reflection, read Proverbs 31. Look for how idealized wisdom is found in the portrait of the woman, and is ultimately embodied in daily actions.
🧠 Reflect: What is shaping your heart right now: appearances, achievements, or reverence for God? In what ways might you be valuing what is outward over what God sees inwardly?
🙏 Pray
Lord, form in us hearts that fear you above all else. Teach us to value what you value, not what fades or deceives. Shape our desires, our words, and our actions so that our lives reflect true wisdom. May we become people who live in quiet faithfulness, trusting that you see and honor what is done in reverence to you.
