CONTEXT 📕
Up until this point, we’ve focused on how King David — and by extension, us — cry to God for help in our pain.
And we see that knowing the Lord’s ways is the solution.
But what happened when the Son of God does the same thing?
We know Jesus as conqueror and king; after all, many of our songs and sermons show Him this way.
But there was a point in Jesus’ time on earth where He cried in anguish, pleading to His Father in the face of coming wrath.
In three of the Gospels, we see Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with a few of his closest disciples.
Moments before His arrest, trial, and execution, He asks them to stand watch while He prays, and then pours out His pleas to the Father:
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
He knew what is to come and what must be done, but he also knew the toll the full experience would take, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
And like David in Psalm 86, we see Jesus:
Make His raw emotion known to the Father, and
Submits to the Father and in doing so, glorifies Him
Let this be the pattern you follow when you face trials in your everyday life.
APPLY AND RESPOND
When Jesus faced unimaginable suffering, He poured out His heart to the Father — not with pretense, but with honesty — and yet, He still surrendered to God’s will.
What would it look like for you to bring your full emotions to God today, while also choosing to trust and submit to His will?
Take a moment today to reflect on how Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane shapes your own approach to pain, surrender, and faith.
