Breaking Down Psalm 16 ✍️

  • Author: Written by David

    • Titled “A miktam of David”, this psalm would be a type of contemplative or precious writing. (More on that later!)

Purpose/theme: Psalm 16 is a prayer of confidence and trust in God.

  • It begins with a declaration of trust in God as a refuge:

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

Psalm 16:1
  • David describes God as his portion and inheritance:

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;

you hold my lot.

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

Psalm 16:5-6
  • David praises God for providing counsel and guidance:

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;

in the night also my heart instructs me.

Psalm 16:7
  • And finally, in our verse this week (v11), David concludes with a profound expression of joy and confidence in God’s presence:

11  You make known to me the path of life;

in your presence there is fullness of joy;

at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

What to expect this week 🥳

This week, as we memorize Psalm 16:11 together, we hope for a few of these outcomes to take place.

  1. We hope you are reminded of the true source of security, joy, and direction for your life.

  2. We pray that, like David, you gain even greater confidence in God’s plan and purpose for your life.

  3. If you are facing difficult times, we pray that this psalm will remind you of the inheritance you have in Christ, and that nothing can ever take it away from you.

11  You make known to me the path of life;

in your presence there is fullness of joy;

at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11

Pray 🙏

Lord, as we reflect on Psalm 16:11 this week, help us to remember that You are our true source of safety, joy, and guidance.

Strengthen our trust in Your plans for us, just as David had faith in Your purpose for his life.

Keep our eyes fixed on you and no other idols. May this psalm bring comfort and reassurance of the eternal inheritance we have through Christ, which is secure and unchanging.

We thank You for Your steadfast love and promises. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Amen 🙏

Listen🎵

Occasionally, there are songs we find that can help us meditate on and memorize our verse for the week.

The opening lyrics to this song reflect the words of Psalm 16 so well:

“Your presence is all I need
It's all I want and all I seek
And without it, without it there's no meaning
Your presence is the air I breathe
The song I sing and the love I need
And without it, without it I'm not living”
