Thirst: From Exodus to Revelation 🪣 🚰

From Exodus to Revelation, we see the theme of thirst woven throughout Scripture.

First in Exodus…

But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?

Exodus 17:3

Ironically, the Israelites questioned if God was trying to kill them with thirst (ṣāmē, pronounced tsaw-may') while they wandered.

Meanwhile, - as you’re about to see - God wants the opposite. He offers the way to quench our thirst and give us life that is truly life.

In addition to other books of the Old Testament (like Judges, Psalms, and Ruth to name a few), we see this in Isaiah:

1 Come, everyone who thirsts,
 come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
 come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
 without money and without price.

Isaiah 55:1

Then, we see it from Jesus multiple times during his ministry:

13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,

14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14 (talking to the Samaritan woman at the well)
An ancient stone Arab well

And again a few chapters later during the Feast of Booths:

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

John 7:37

And finally, we see it culminate in Revelation as John describes the New Heavens and New Earth:

17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Revelation 22:17

From start to finish, God is in the business of offering the only permanent solution to our spiritual thirst.

And he offers it freely.

Sounds great..

But how can we trust that this isn’t too good to be true? That our seemingly infinite thirst will actually be quenched?

Amazing Grace ✝️

In Jesus’ final breaths, dying on the cross in total agony, John records:

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”

John 19:28
Man on the cross suffering

In the single greatest act of grace in cosmic history:

Jesus suffered infinite thirst.

In order to quench ours.

Thanks Jesus’ saving work on the cross, you no longer have to suffer the separation from God and spiritual thirst caused by your sin.

There’s nothing you can do to earn your way back into the presence of God.

It’s a 100% completely and totally free gift.

It’s amazing grace.

Praise

Thank you, Jesus! Thank you for suffering infinite thirst so that I can come and drink the water of life freely! 🙌

Help me live a life in grateful response to this unfathomable grace! 🙏

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;

my soul thirsts for you;

as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
