CONTEXT 📕
This week, we’ve explored 1 Peter 4:9-10.
Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.
On Monday, we looked at the whole book.
We stepped into the world of 1 Peter — a letter written to early believers scattered across Asia Minor around AD 62.
The early Christians there were living as exiles - not because they had been displaced geographically - but because they had chosen allegiance to Jesus in a world that didn’t understand them.
Peter called them to live faithfully in a culture that saw them as strange, reminding them of who they really are: chosen, set apart, and called to endure with hope.
On Tuesday, we examined the passage’s immediate context.
We saw Peter urge Christians to have an eternal perspective - to understand both life's brevity and eternity's reality.
And since "the end of all things is at hand," Christians should prioritize God's will over worldly passions.
And in this case, God’s will is that we use the gifts he’s given us to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ.
On Wednesday, we dug into three key Greek words:
Philoxenoi — Translated as “hospitable,” this word literally means “loving strangers.” For early Christians in a time of persecution, opening one’s home to other Christians was risky but vital.
Charisma — Often translated as “gift,” this word can also mean “grace.” A charisma is a grace-empowered ability given to you by God for the purpose of serving others.
Oikonomoi — This word means “stewards” or “household managers.” In the ancient world, a steward was someone entrusted with the care of another’s property. Peter’s point? Nothing we have belongs to us — not our homes, not our gifts, not even our time.
And so everything we have — our homes, our talents, our time, our money — are ultimately gifts we received from God in order to give away.
And on Thursday, we discovered (or rediscovered) what grace is.
Grace is receiving that which you don’t deserve.
On the cross, Jesus took on the punishment for your sin (which he didn’t deserve) in order to give us life and reconciliation with God (which we didn’t deserve).
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift (charisma) of God.
When we recognize that we’ve received the greatest gift we could possibly receive, it empowers us to serve fellow believers - even when it’s costly, inconvenient and they did nothing to “deserve it.”
APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃♂️
So what do we do with all this information?
We put it into practice:
Live generously. Ask God to show you one way this weekend to use your time, your home, or finances to bless someone — especially someone outside your normal circle.
Serve intentionally. Think of one believer you can encourage with your gifts. Then go and do it instead of keeping your gifts to yourself.
Witness to God’s grace. As exiles in the world, we are also called to bring others the truth of the gospel. So ask God to give you an opportunity this weekend to share the gospel with someone who doesn’t know Jesus, through words and the witness of your service.
Pray 🙏
Father, thank You for the amazing Grace you’ve given me. Make me a faithful steward of it. Help me love strangers, serve boldly, and speak clearly of the hope I have in Jesus. Amen.
