Feed Children, Transform Lives!

There are three words Paul uses as he encourages Timothy in the faith that I want to take a closer look at.

1. dynamis (doo-NAH-mis): “power”

This is the same word Jesus uses in Acts 1:8, promising the Spirit would come:

This power is the same force that raised Jesus from the dead. It’s the power that God gave to Timothy as he led in the Ephesian church, and it’s the same power God gives to us who have put our faith in Jesus.

2. agape (ah-GAH-pay): “love”

Greek has several words for love. Agape is the one that doesn’t depend on how lovable you are.

It’s the word John uses for how “God so loved the world” (John 3:16) — a love that moves toward people unconditionally, not because they earned it.

3. sophronismos (so-fro-nis-MOS): “self-control”

This exact word shows up nowhere else in the entire New Testament.

Some translations render it “a sound mind.” It describes a mind that’s been put back together, steady enough to think clearly when everything in you wants to panic.

The Spirit gives power, love, and self-control so that Timothy can stand firm and fulfill the ministry God has entrusted to him.

Of the three gifts Paul names — power, love, or self control/a sound mind — which do you need most in your current season of life?

Pick one. Ask God specifically for that one today, by name, instead of a vague “help me.” Write it on a sticky note or your phone lock screen so you remember to ask again tomorrow morning.

Father, thank you that I don’t have to manufacture power, love, or a sound mind on my own. Your Spirit already supplied all three. Help me actually reach for the one I’m short on today, instead of white-knuckling it alone. Amen.
