Author & Audience Context: 2 Timothy ✍️

🤔 Imagine you knew the end of your life was near, and you wanted to pass on the most important truths to your family and friends.

What would you say?

This is what the Apostle Paul did, likely near the end of his life, while imprisoned in Rome around AD 66–67.

Paul wrote two letters to Timothy, a younger pastor, offering guidance and encouragement in ministry.

2 Timothy (Paul’s second letter) is pastoral, filled with personal reflections and care, and meant to prepare Timothy for leadership in challenging times.

Paul wanted Timothy to be a vibrant follower of Jesus and a leader in the early church.

As we end of 2024 and head into a new year, we need to hear and be encouraged by what Paul said!

Passage Context: The foundation 🏡

Written just after an extended section on the danger of false teachers, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 declares:

  • the divine origin of Scripture (“breathed out by God”), and

  • its practical purposes for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.

Throughout Paul’s two letters to Timothy, he emphasizes the sufficiency of Jesus and the sufficiency of the Bible.

These two verses are a cornerstone text in the New Testament about the authority and purpose of Scripture in both personal discipleship and communal life.

You are about to memorize a passage that is foundational to our faith!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that the Bible is not just a historical text.

It is God’s living Word, meant to shape every aspect of our lives.

As we hope you’ve seen by being part of the Malachi Daily community, engaging with Scripture requires more than just a surface-level reading.

It invites us to dive deeper, trusting its divine authorship and transformative power.

Reflect 🤔

Do you turn to Scripture for guidance in daily decisions, or do you rely more on personal wisdom, feelings, or culture? Be honest with yourself and God.

What would it look like to recenter your life on the authority of God’s Word?

Write ✍️

Consider journaling about an area of life where you’ve been searching for direction.

And pray specifically for God to speak through his Word this week.

Pray 🙏

Lord, thank you for your inspired Word.

Teach me to approach it with humility, trust, and a willingness to be shaped by it. You are the potter, I am the clay.

Help me listen and obey as I read this week.

Amen 🙏

Read 📖

Read 2 Timothy 3 in its entirety today to see the broader context of Paul’s encouragement to Timothy and to prepare for the week.

👂️ Bonus: Listen to it on your drive to and from work.

Listen 🎵

Song is one of the most effective ways to internalize and memorize God’s Word.

(That’s why we can remember song lyrics from 30+ years ago!)

This week, let’s listen to Abby Houston’s rendition of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 together!

It’s a short (30 second) melody of the two verses, so I plan to set it on repeat and listen to it in the background while I work.

See you in your inbox tomorrow as we dig deeper into our memory verse!

Have a great week! 👋

Best,

Mark, Kieran and Isaac
