CONTEXT 📕

Author: The Book of Acts is attributed to Luke, a physician (Colossians 4:14) and companion of the apostle Paul.

He also authored the Gospel of Luke, and together, they form a unified narrative addressed to Theophilus (Luke 1:3; Acts 1:1). There is debate around whether Theophilus is a specific person, or a more general meaning (the name means “lover of God”).

Date: Most scholars date Acts between AD 62–80.

Audience: Acts was written to "Theophilus" but intended for a broader Gentile audience.

The book likely addressed Greek-speaking Christians throughout the Roman world who needed clarity on the relationship between the Jewish roots of the faith and the inclusion of Gentiles.

Acts is all about mission:

  • Acts traces the growth of the early Church from Jerusalem to Rome, showing the spread of the gospel, which grows despite persecution and opposition, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Luke emphasizes the unity of God’s plan, showing continuity between Israel’s Scriptures and the mission of Jesus and the apostles (Acts 2:16–21; 13:32–39).

  • The book includes key speeches from Peter, Stephen, and Paul, offering theological reflection on Jesus’ identity and the nature of salvation.

The Purpose of Acts

  • To provide a theological and historical account of the birth and expansion of the early Christian movement, empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

  • To demonstrate that the gospel is for all people — both Jews and Gentiles — and that Jesus is the risen Lord of all nations.

  • To validate the apostles’ ministry, especially Paul’s, as part of God’s unfolding plan to bring salvation “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8; 28:30–31).

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂️

Imagine standing before a crowd that sees you as a threat and could decide to end your life.

You aren’t there because you did anything evil, but because you spoke truth, healed a lame man, and proclaimed hope.

That’s where Peter and John were in Acts 4.

Surrounded by powerful religious leaders, they didn’t back down.

They declared boldly that salvation is found in Jesus alone — not in power, not in status, and not in anything a human could do.

And this name can give life to all people under heaven.

The message of Acts is clear: the gospel is unstoppable, and Jesus is the only way to true life.

This truth fuels our mission as believers.

Read: Read Acts 3:1-4:22.

Pray:

Jesus, I confess that I often look to other things to save or satisfy me. Remind me that You alone are my hope and Lord. Give me boldness to speak Your name with love, truth, and grace. Amen. 🙏
