Colossians 1:9
CONTEXT 📕
So far, we’ve slowed down on Colossians 1:9.
We’ve stepped back to see the big picture: why Paul wrote this letter to a young church he’d never even met.
We’ve zoomed in on the chapter’s flow and the weight of words like filled, knowledge, and will.
But now we need to ask the most important question: how does this prayer actually pull us closer to Jesus?
Every single prayer in the New Testament eventually circles back to Him.
Here’s the connection Paul makes:
He prays that the Colossians would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
And then, only a few verses later, he drops this bombshell:
“For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” (Colossians 1:19)
“In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3)
Paul isn’t praying for God to download facts into their brains like some kind of spiritual data transfer. He’s praying they would press deeper into a Person.
Every ounce of wisdom, every drop of knowledge, every glimpse of God’s will is found in Jesus Himself.

Think about it:
To be filled isn’t about stuffing your life with podcasts, devotionals, or even “spiritual activity.” It’s about being so full of His Spirit that when people bump into you, Jesus spills out. (John 7:38–39)
To have knowledge isn’t about winning Bible trivia. It’s about knowing Jesus the way you know your best friend’s laugh in a crowded room. Deep. Personal. Intimate. (John 17:3)
To understand God’s will isn’t about cracking a secret code for your future job, spouse, or city. It’s recognizing that God’s will is first and foremost that you follow Jesus, become more like him and make him known. (John 6:40)
To live with wisdom and understanding isn’t about clever strategies for life. It’s about living God’s way in a culture that often celebrates the complete opposite.
Colossians 1:9 is not about chasing principles. It’s about chasing a Person.
Jesus is the will of God made visible. Jesus is the wisdom of God wrapped in flesh. Jesus is the knowledge of God revealed in a way you can actually know Him.
So when you pray Colossians 1:9, don’t imagine God handing you a spiritual syllabus.
Imagine Him handing you His Son and saying, “Everything you’re asking for is right here.”
APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃♂️
It’s easy to treat the Bible like a textbook. Trust me as someone who has a few biblical degrees under my belt and still feels lost in my faith at times.
Colossians 1:9 reminds us: the point isn’t information.
It’s Jesus.
So here’s how you can put this into action today:
Read Colossians 1:15–20 aloud. Don’t skim it. Read it slowly, like it’s the most important news of your life. Every line paints a picture of Jesus— Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer.
Meditate on one phrase. Lock in Colossians 2:3: “In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Write it on a sticky note and put it in your pocket.
Change your Bible reading posture. Next time you open Scripture, pause first and whisper this prayer: “Jesus, show me Yourself here.” Then read expectantly, looking for Him, not just a moral takeaway.
Share this with one person today. Text a friend or send a voice memo. Say something simple like: “Hey, I’ve been praying Colossians 1:9 over you this week and that God would fill you with wisdom and reveal His will for you.”
COMMUNITY FEEDBACK ❤️
I love everything about how this presented! I like the word study in the original language and how the verse is broken down. So glad I stumbled upon this. Thank you and God bless!

Love the whole concept of Malachi Daily. I’ve been a Christian for many years. Somewhere along the road due to life changes I got off track of daily reading God’s word. I started doing the daily reading plan on Jan. 1. I listen to it daily but don’t feel like I get a lot from it. This however, I look forward to the daily email and everything that goes along with it. Thank you for your dedication to getting the Word out!
