Your teen is being discipled every day. The question is: by whom?

As followers of Jesus, this season is about more than just new teachers and fresh notebooks. Between classes, our kids and teens are learning what earns approval, who they think they need to be to fit in, and what success looks like in their world.

Those lessons come through friends, group chats, social media, and the countless messages competing for their attention every day.

We can't be present for every single moment with them — but we can be prepared for the conversations they create.

“Teach them diligently” can sound a little abstract, like a note on a report card. But the Hebrew underneath it is sharper…Literally.

The word is shanan, and its root has to do with sharpening.

It shows up again a few chapters later, when God says, “if I sharpen my flashing sword…” (Deuteronomy 32:41).

Shanan is what you do to a blade.

So “teach them diligently” means diligent, repeated instruction with the picture of sharpening behind it: working God’s words in by deliberate strokes until they are etched into someone.

That reframes the whole command.

Moses isn’t asking for one big amazing talk you give to the young people in your life.

He is describing the patient, unglamorous work of saying the same true things again and again until they cut a groove in a child’s mind.

Anyone who has repeated a lesson with a kid for a month knows the feeling. Nothing seems to be happening, and then one day it is simply clicks, sharp and ready, right when they need it.

Then Moses names when this work happens:

Sit and walk. Lie down and rise.

That is a Hebrew way of covering the whole ordinary day: at home and on the road, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

God’s words were never meant to be quarantined in a weekly service. They were meant to become the language of your kitchen, your car, and your bedtime.

When did God’s words last come up in an ordinary moment at home or out and about — not as a lesson — but just as part of the conversation?

Pick one ordinary moment today: the drive, the dinner table, the few minutes before bed. In it, say one true thing about God or his Word out loud, to someone younger than you.

Father, thank you that you don’t ask for perfect speeches, but rather faithful repetition. Sharpen your Word into me, and into the ones I love, a little at a time, until it is there when we need it. Give me one moment to do that today. Amen.
