CONTEXT 📕

The Book of Ephesians is a letter written by the apostle Paul that celebrates the greatness of God's saving plan in Jesus Christ.

It explains who believers are because of Christ, what God has done to save them by grace, and how Christians are called to live as one united family in him.

Unlike many of Paul's letters, Ephesians spends less time addressing specific problems in a church and more time helping believers understand the incredible blessings they have received through the gospel.

Author: The apostle Paul (Ephesians 1:1)

Date: Ephesians was most likely written around AD 60–62 while Paul was imprisoned in Rome (Acts 28:30–31). It is one of Paul's four “Prison Epistles,” along with Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.

Audience: The letter was written to the believers in Ephesus and likely passed around to other churches throughout the Roman province of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). The audience included both Jewish and Gentile Christians who were learning what it meant to live together as one people in Christ.

Cultural Context: Ephesus was one of the largest and most influential cities in the Roman Empire. It was a thriving center of commerce, politics, and religion, best known for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The city was also deeply involved in pagan worship and the practice of magic (Acts 19:18–20).

An image of what the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus may have looked like in Paul’s day.

Purpose: Paul wrote Ephesians to encourage believers by reminding them of the riches of God's grace and the new identity they have in Christ.

The first half of the letter focuses on what God has done for us through Jesus, while the second half explains how those truths should shape the way Christians live.

Throughout the letter, Paul emphasizes several major themes including:

  • God's Grace in Salvation: Salvation is entirely God's work. We are rescued from sin by his grace through faith, not because of anything we have earned or accomplished.

  • Unity in the Church: Through the cross, Jesus has united Jews and Gentiles into one body. Those who were once separated have become fellow citizens and members of God's household.

  • Standing Firm in Spiritual Warfare: The Christian life is a spiritual battle. God provides his armor so that believers can stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

The Roman world placed tremendous value on status, wealth, power, citizenship, and social standing. A person's worth was often measured by family heritage, accomplishments, or position in society.

But Paul presents a radically different vision.

He reminds believers that their true identity is not found in their past, their achievements, or their place in the world, but in Christ.

Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, those who were once spiritually dead have been made alive. Those who were far from God have been brought near. And those who were strangers have become members of God's family.

This truth prepares us to understand one of the clearest depictions of salvation by faith in all of Scripture.

In Ephesians 2:8–9, Paul reminds us that our salvation is a gift of God to be received by faith and NOT a ticket to heaven that we can earn through our own striving.

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

Many people believe that Christianity works like this:

If you try to be a good person, and your good deeds outweigh the bad deeds, God will let you into heaven.

But that is far from the truth. This week, we’ll explore the good news of the gospel and equip you to share it with someone in your life!

📖 Read: Before we focus on Ephesians 2:8–9, read the entire chapter of Ephesians 2. Seeing the whole chapter and noticing the flow will help you appreciate the richness of these two verses.

🧠 Reflect: When you think about your relationship with God, are you more likely to focus on what you have done for him or what he has done for you? Why do you think that is?

🙏 Pray

Lord, thank you for your amazing grace. As I study Ephesians 2, help me to understand more deeply who I was apart from you, what you have done to save me, and who I now am in Christ. Keep me from trusting in my own efforts, and teach me to rest in your finished work. May the truth of your grace fill me with gratitude and a desire to live in a way that honors you. Amen.
