CONTEXT 📕
Every single day — especially in these times — we are surrounded by countless ideas, responsibilities, and decisions.
Some choices are small: What is for breakfast? Others carry more weight: What deserves my attention today?
With so many voices and demands competing for our attention, it’s easy to become distracted, short-sighted, and focused on what feels urgent rather than what’s most important.
Many options sound like good ideas in the moment, yet they can pull us away from what truly matters.
As a result, we can become consumed with lesser things and lose sight of the reason we began in the first place.
Paul wrote the book of Galatians to churches in the region of Galatia who had faced a much more serious version of that problem.
They had received the true gospel: that sinners are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. But false teachers came in and added requirements to the gospel.
They persuaded the Galatians that trusting Christ was not enough and that they needed to keep aspects of the law in order to be accepted by God.
The result was distraction and confusion, and they were being pulled away from the truth.
A small step off course may not seem significant at first. But if a person continues in that direction, they eventually end up far from where they began.
For example, if a plane leaving Los Angeles for New York shifts the front of the plane only a few degrees south, it will eventually land in Washington, D.C. instead.
In the same way, when we move away from the true gospel, we must not treat it lightly. We need to return to Christ and to the truth of his Word.
You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
Paul’s question is direct: Who hindered you? Who persuaded you to turn away from the truth?
In other words: You were running well. Do not let false teaching distract you from Christ. Stand firm in the gospel, remember who called you, and keep walking in the truth.
