Happy Monday, {{first_name | everyone}}!

Back when we first started Malachi Daily in 2023, one of the first verses we memorized was Joshua 1:9.

Personally, this verse has been one I’ve held onto tightly during hard times. Our two oldest kids (now ages 5 and 6) have it memorized as well, and it’s been the go-to verse we talk about whenever they’re afraid of something.

If you’ve already memorized Joshua 1:9, don’t tune out this week. We invite you to engage with the verse in a fresh way. We believe you will learn something new that brings additional meaning and depth to it!

In today’s email…

  • 🧠 Background on the book of Joshua and key themes

  • 📖 A challenge to read and reflect

  • 🎵 A song to help you remember your courage..

MEMORIZE 🧠

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9

CONTEXT 📕

Joshua is the sort of book I’m surprised they haven’t made many movies about! Here are the basics to set the stage for what we need to know.

Author: Joshua (son of Nun) was the successor to Moses and is generally considered to have written the majority of this book.

Date: It was likely written in the late 15th or early 14th century BC (about 3,500 years ago).

Audience: It was originally written to the Jewish people who first entered the Promised Land & experienced the initial fulfillment of God's promises to provide land and a nation to Abraham's descendants (Genesis 12:1–3).

Cultural Context: The book is set in the period of Israel’s transition from wilderness wandering to nationhood. If you remember the high level story, the Israelites were miraculously freed from slavery in Egypt. Then they spent 40 years wandering in the desert. Just before the Israelites are finally about to cross the Jordan River and enter the Promised Land, Moses dies and Joshua becomes the leader.

This all happened during a time when surrounding Canaanite cultures were deeply idolatrous and morally corrupt (Deuteronomy 9:4–5), which was in stark contrast to God's call for Israel to be a set apart, holy nation.

Purpose: The book of Joshua narrates the conquest and settlement of Canaan under Joshua’s leadership. When you read the book in its entirety, you can see two major themes:

  1. God demonstrating His faithfulness in fulfilling His covenant promises

  2. God calling Israel to covenant obedience in the land

Time and time again, we see that success comes from God’s presence and obedience to his word. And we see warnings that future life in the Promised Land depends on continued faithfulness.

God didn’t speak Joshua 1:9 as vague inspiration. God spoke it to a leader standing on the edge of an enormous, overwhelming task.

Joshua was on the precipice of war. He was called to lead an entire nation into hostile territory, to face giants, fortified cities, and disasters. All with the weight of following in Moses’ footsteps! Talk about big shoes to fill.

The fear was real and the challenges were daunting.

Into that, God speaks our memory verse:

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

In Joshua 1:9, God wasn’t promising Joshua that the road would be easy. But God was very clear that Joshua wouldn’t walk it alone.

And the same is true for us.

We’re not called to conquer land today, but we are called to trust God during the big, bold things placed in front of us — parenting, ministry, career changes, obedience in an environment hostile to God, and loving people who are hard to love.

These may not look like Jericho, but they can feel just as intimidating.

We can’t afford to let fear write our story. We walk forward because God goes with us. The question is: Will we shrink back? Or will we step out, knowing who walks beside us?

📖 Read: Take 5 minutes to read all of Joshua chapter 1. Read it out loud if you’re able. Let God’s commission to Joshua settle in. What do you notice?

🙏 Pray

Father, You know how often I hesitate when the road ahead looks hard. Thank You for reminding me that courage doesn’t come from having it all together. It comes from knowing You are with me. Prepare my heart this week to receive what You want to say through your Word. I want to obey the command in this verse, and I need Your help to do it. Amen.
