Happy Monday, {{first_name | everyone}}!

Some mornings the alarm goes off and we're already tired before the day has started. Maybe it's the weight of something unresolved or the weight of grief.

Whatever the reason, there are seasons of life when the morning can feel less like a fresh start and more like another round.

The verse we're memorizing this week was written in exactly one of those seasons. And it’s one of the most quoted declarations of God's faithfulness in all of Scripture.

In today’s email…

  • 🧠 Background on the book of Lamentations and key themes

  • 📖 A challenge to read and reflect

  • 🎵 A song to help you remember Scripture’s deepest truths..

MEMORIZE 🧠

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

TOGETHER WITH COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL

Kids don't need a perfect mom. They need a praying one.

A lot of moms (and grandmas) don't need to hear "try harder." They already are.

Motherhood is beautiful and full — from bedtime songs to the unprompted "I love you" from the backseat. But woven into the beautiful are the hard moments. The 2am spirals. The loneliness. The feeling that you're not enough or that no one sees how hard you're trying.

God sees all of it, and He meets you right there.

The Power of a Praying Mom is a free guide from Compassion International that gives you seven honest prayers for seven types of difficult motherhood moments. Rather than a pep talk, the guide provides actual words to bring before God when you don't know what to say.

CONTEXT 📕

The Book of Lamentations is mostly a collection of poetic laments (passionate expressions of grief, sorrow, or deep regret) written in response to one of the darkest moments in Israel’s history: the destruction of Jerusalem.

Rather than telling the story through narrative, Lamentations expresses grief through poetry as God’s people wrestle with the aftermath of exile and judgment.

Author: Although the author is never explicitly named in the text, this book is traditionally associated with the prophet Jeremiah. Because of Jeremiah’s ministry during Jerusalem’s fall and the similarities in tone and theme between Jeremiah and Lamentations, many Jewish and Christian traditions connect the two books.

Date: Lamentations was likely written shortly after the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BC, while the devastation of the city was still fresh in the minds of the people.

Audience: The book was written for the people of Judah during and after the Babylonian exile. It speaks to a community processing loss, suffering, displacement, and the consequences of being unfaithful to their covenant with God.

Cultural Context: In the ancient world, cities represented security, identity, and divine protection. And Jerusalem was not only Israel’s political capital, but also the location of the temple — the place where God’s presence dwelt among the people. So when Jerusalem fell, it created not only a national, political crisis, but also a very real spiritual and theological one.

Purpose: Lamentations gives God’s people language for grief. The book teaches how to bring sorrow, repentance, and even questions before God honestly. Yet even in the middle of deep suffering, the book holds onto hope in God’s character and covenant faithfulness. Here are some major themes that appear throughout the book:

  • Grief and Lament: Sorrow and suffering should not be ignored or hidden, but brought honestly before God.

  • Judgment and Sin: Jerusalem’s destruction was connected to the people’s covenant unfaithfulness and rebellion against God.

  • God’s Faithfulness: Even in the midst of judgment, God’s steadfast love and mercy remain. This is most clearly seen in our memory verse, Lamentations 3:22–23.

  • Hope in the Midst of Suffering: There is hope, even when things are dark, rooted in God’s character.

Israel lived among other nations that often viewed military strength and political stability as their ultimate security.

But Lamentations reminds God’s people that their true hope was never meant to rest in a city, a king, or national success — it was meant to rest in the Lord himself.

Even in exile, grief and ruin, God’s mercies are new every morning!

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

📖 Read: To prepare for our memory verse journey, read Lamentations 3 and notice how verses 21–24 fit into the overall flow.

🧠 Reflect: What circumstances in your life are tempting you toward discouragement or hopelessness right now? Name them and bring them to God in prayer.

🙏 Pray

Lord, thank you that your steadfast love never ceases and your mercies never come to an end. Prepare my heart to encounter you today and this week. There are parts of my life where I’m experiencing discouragement. Remind me that your faithfulness is greater than my fears and stronger than my circumstances. Teach me to trust you daily, even when life feels uncertain or heavy. Amen.
