Good morning, {{first_name | everyone}}!

Today, we’re shifting down one more gear to spend time with three specific Greek words in Luke 2:10-11.

In today’s email…

  • 🤗 It’s all Greek to me (yet means so much)

  • 🙏 Pick someone by name and pray this

  • 📚️ Resources to help you keep studying Luke’s gospel..

MEMORIZE 🧠

And the angel said to them, “____ ___, for behold, _ ______ ___ _____ ____ of great joy that will be for all the people.

For ____ ___ __ ____ ___ ___ in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:10-11

CONTEXT 📕

Today we slow down and look closely at a few key words inside Luke 2:10–11.

These verses look simple, but each word carries incredible theological weight, especially in Luke’s gospel.

1. euangelizomai (you-ahn-ghell-IDZ-oh-my) — “bring good news”

This verb — euangelizomai — was commonly used in the ancient world. “Good news” would be a familiar phrase to ancient ears. It was primarily used for royal announcements.

  • Caesar’s victories were called “good news”

  • A new emperor’s birth was “good news”

  • Military success was referred to as “good news”

But Luke uses the same word to show a reversal: The real good news isn’t coming from Caesar’s throne…but from God, through a child in a manger.

Into that world comes a new kind of announcement. Not of power tightening its grip, but about God breaking it. Euangelizomai isn’t just good news. It’s history-breaking, burden-lifting, joy-giving, life-changing news.

In short, it’s the best news. Ever.

2. chara megale (KHA-rah meh-GAH-lay) — “great joy”

I love this phrase because it literally means mega joy.

Remember the world of Luke 2 — census pressure, social marginalization, and fear — there was no Christmas magic in the air. Into that backdrop, the angel announces a lasting joy that belongs to all the people.

The kind of joy that flips the world upside down. The joy Mary sang about in her Magnificat (Luke 1). And it’s the joy Jesus talks about in the parable of the hidden treasure (Matthew 13).

3. sōtēr (SOH-tare) — “Savior”

This single word would have startled the shepherds. “Savior” (sōtēr) was a title used for God in the Old Testament, leaders God raised up to deliver Israel, and rulers like Caesar who claimed to bring peace and salvation.

So when the angel announces the birth of a Savior, the lowly shepherds would have been shocked on two accounts:

  1. The long awaited messiah is finally here

  2. They - the overlooked shepherds - were who the angels were sent to tell!

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

Today, let’s take these words and move from language to life. Choose one word in Luke 2:10-11 and pray it over one person who needs Jesus.

Pick someone by name. Then pray something like:

  • “Lord, let Your good news reach them.”

  • “Jesus, bring great joy into their life today.”

  • “Jesus, be their Savior in a real way.”

  • “Jesus, show them You are Lord.”

Let one word become one simple act of intercession on behalf another. This may be a seed that grows into a conversation later this week.

🙏 Pray

Father, thank You that these words are not abstract ideas but living truths. Help me grasp their weight, feel their comfort, and share their hope. Open my eyes to someone who needs Your joy today. Amen.

TOGETHER WITH VOICE OF THE MARTYRS

A Free Book to Inspire Generosity

Before there was Santa Claus, there was Nicholas — a man who refused to deny Christ.

When both his parents died, young Nicholas used his inheritance to help others. As a church leader, he was imprisoned under Roman emperor Diocletian, who targeted Christians to stop the gospel's spread.

After his release, Nicholas faced a new threat: false teaching infiltrating the church. Standing for truth came with a price. But it didn't stop him from generously giving to those in need, and he did so until his death.
