CONTEXT 📕
In Mark's Gospel, Jesus is always moving: healing, teaching, casting out demons, walking. Mark says "immediately" more than 40 times.
The early church connected this Gospel to John Mark, who wrote down the preaching of the apostle Peter. He likely wrote it originally for Gentile believers in Rome who were under real pressure for their faith.
His aim was to show them who Jesus is: the powerful Son of God who calmed storms, and the suffering servant who walked straight toward the cross.
Here's a detail I came across in my research:
Mark frames the middle section of his Gospel with two healings of blind men (Mark 8:22–26 and Mark 10:46–52).
In between the two stories, the disciples are shown — figuratively — to be just as blind.
Their eyes work fine but what they can't see is the kind of Messiah Jesus actually is.
Three times on the road, Jesus tells them plainly that he will suffer and die. And three times they miss it…still arguing about who's the greatest.
Our memory verse comes right at the end of that stretch, just after James and John ask for the best seats in glory.
Instead of scolding them, Jesus redefines greatness itself:
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
This is the hinge of Mark's whole Gospel.
The King wears a crown of thorns, and he calls us to follow his path.
