CONTEXT 📕

On Monday, we introduced the parable of the hidden treasure, a one-verse story tucked inside a chapter of Kingdom secrets.

Jesus tells of a man who finds treasure buried in a field, hides it again, and with joy sells everything he owns to buy the field.

We discovered that the Kingdom of Heaven is not obvious to everyone. It’s often hidden, waiting to be found by those with eyes to see and hearts ready to respond.

On Tuesday, we explored the deeper meaning behind the man’s actions. He doesn’t act out of guilt, obligation, or fear, but out of joy. His decision is immediate and wholehearted.

Discipleship, we learned, isn’t a slow trade of loss after loss.

It’s the joyful surrender of everything because of what’s gained. The Kingdom isn’t about cost. It’s about value.

On Wednesday, we examined four key Greek words from the passage — basileía (Kingdom), thēsaurós (treasure), chará (joy), and pōléō (sell).

Each word revealed something powerful: the Kingdom is not just a place, it’s the active reign of God.

The treasure is more than helpful, it’s life-altering.

The joy is deep, abiding, and holy.

And the sale isn’t a loss, it’s the only logical response to finding something truly priceless.

On Thursday, we turned to Jesus Himself, the One telling the parable. He didn’t just talk about giving everything for a treasure. He lived it.

Philippians 2 reminded us that though He was in the form of God, Jesus emptied Himself, taking on flesh and dying on a cross. He gave up everything not because He had to, but because you were worth it to Him.

Jesus is both the One who gave everything and the Treasure worth giving everything for.

At the heart of this parable is a question: Are you sold out for the Kingdom?

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂️

Who needs to hear what you’ve discovered?

  • Someone you know who’s chasing everything but Jesus?

  • A curious friend who goes to church but hasn’t experienced the truth that they were the treasure Jesus came and died for?

Here’s your challenge:

Don’t keep this treasure buried. Share it.

I’m all about texting friends, but you might want to write a letter, jump on a call, or meet someone for coffee. Regardless of how you do, just do it!

Use what you’ve learned this week to invite someone else to seek the Kingdom.

You can say something as simple as:

“Hey [friend’s name], I’ve been thinking about this one verse: Matthew 13:44. Jesus describes the Kingdom like treasure buried in a field. The man finds it, and with joy, sells everything to have it. Made me realize that real faith is about joyfully giving everything because of what we’ve found. Wanted to share that with you.”

And if this week opened your own eyes, don’t walk away unchanged.

Choose today to give Jesus everything.

Start fresh. Recommit. Take the next bold step.

You’ve found the treasure. Now live like it.

ANSWER KEY

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up.

Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Lastly, some personal news: My wife Dana just gave birth to our fourth child - our daughter Lucy Grace! Lucy means “light” and her siblings are in love!

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
