CONTEXT 📕

Matthew 13:44 is often read like a private treasure map for insiders; a word just for Jesus’ disciples.

But this parable isn’t just for the already committed.

It’s for the curious. For the crowds. For anyone still deciding if Jesus is worth it.

It’s not merely a description of the Kingdom, it’s a provocation. A challenge to re-evaluate everything.

It’s a bold statement that should stop people in their tracks to ask: Really? What if this is true? What if this Jesus guy really is who he says he is?

For the curious non-Christian and the devoted disciple alike, Jesus’ invitation is the same: follow me.

Not as an intellectual exercise or concept, but as a person.

Do what I taught. Follow my example.

And you will experience the Kingdom as a treasure and the joy of the man in this parable.

A foggy day in Carpegna! :)

Joy reframes discipleship. While following Jesus is costly, it’s not primarily about loss.

It’s about joyfully letting go of what cannot last to gain what never fades.

For Jesus, this isn’t just a nice idea.

Philippians 2 says that He emptied Himself, took on flesh, and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Jesus didn’t just tell a story about treasure. He lived it.

He gave up everything. Because He had a treasure worth dying for.

You.

APPLY AND RESPOND

Parables don’t end when Jesus stops speaking.

They linger, pressing the listener to respond.

This one is no exception.

The man in the parable doesn’t hesitate. He sees the treasure, counts the cost, and acts with joy. Not reluctance. Not fear. Joy.

And that’s what makes this parable so explosive. It doesn’t just ask if you believe the Kingdom is real. It asks if you believe it’s worth everything.

Many of us want it all — our things and the treasure.

We want to follow Jesus without surrendering comfort, control, or reputation.

But Jesus doesn’t offer the Kingdom as a side dish.

He offers it as the only thing worth building your entire life around.

Pray 🙏

Jesus, I admit I’ve wanted You in small measure. But You are the ultimate treasure. Help me see You clearly. Give me the joy to let go of everything that keeps me from being all in with You. I don’t want part of the Kingdom — I want all of it. Amen.

TOGETHER WITH PRISON FELLOWSHIP

“Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

— Hebrews 13:3

God’s Word instructs us as believers to remember those in prison as if we were behind bars, sitting right next to them.

But how can we do this?

Thanks to Prison Fellowship, living out this verse is simple and life-changing for us and for our incarcerated brothers and sisters.

The answer? Bibles.

Your gift today to Prison Fellowship will put Bibles and Christian content into the hands of waiting prisoners. Give now to reach men and women with what they need most: God’s Word! Thank you for remembering those in prison.

ANSWER KEY

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up.

Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
