So far, we’ve spent the week looking at servants measured by their level of faithfulness.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the one Servant who fulfilled the Father’s will completely.

Paul writes that Jesus..

The master from the parable of the talents became the perfectly good and faithful Servant.

He did not bury his life to keep it safe.

He invested all of it, obeyed all the way to the cross, and through his sacrifice, we were bought back into reconciled relationship with God.

In the parable, the master invites the faithful servants to “enter into the joy of your master.”

Where does that joy come from?

Scripture tells us that Jesus, “for the joy set before him,” endured the cross (Hebrews 12:2).

The joy the master shares with his people is not shallow happiness or a reward we earn by proving ourselves. It’s the lasting joy Christ secured through his perfect obedience, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection.

Jesus is the master who will return and call his servants to account. Yet he is also the servant who humbled himself for sinners.

He is the perfectly faithful servant where every one of us has failed.

Fortunately, though, we do not “enter his joy” by producing an impressive record. We enter by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone because of his faithfulness.

🤔 Reflect: Where has fear kept you quiet about Jesus, or left you sitting on a gift God gave you to build up his people?

In 1855, a shy Sunday school teacher named Edward Kimball decided to visit one of his students at work, a teenage shoe clerk in Boston. On the way there his nerve nearly failed him. He walked past the store once, worried he would embarrass the boy in front of the other clerks. Then he turned around, went in, found the young man in the back wrapping shoes, put a hand on his shoulder, and said something simple about how much Christ loved him.

That was it. No debate or perfect speech. One nervous man who didn’t sit on the truth about Jesus.

The shoe clerk was Dwight L. Moody, who would go on to preach the gospel to millions. Kimball almost buried his one sentence out of fear. He said it anyway, and God did the rest.

Father, thank you for Jesus, the faithful Servant who buried nothing and gave everything. I have gone silent out of fear more times than I can count. Give me courage this week to speak of him to one specific person you bring to mind. In Jesus’ name, amen.
