“Learn from me..” 🙋
In yesterday’s email, we remembered that Jesus’ invitation (“Come to me…”) is not primarily to a set of rules or religious beliefs - but rather an invitation to a person - himself - and his way of life.
In his next sentence (verse 29), Jesus encourages us to learn from him.
“..learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Not only do we have a personal God who draws near and invites us in, we have a God who took on flesh and bones and walked the earth He created.
So in addition to what he taught, we can look to what he did and with the help of the Holy Spirit, model our lives after his.
Application: Imitating Jesus 🏃♂️
Here are 3 patterns we see in Jesus’ life:
🙏 Time alone with God: Despite a full schedule, Jesus prioritized time in solitude and silence to be with the Father in prayer.
😬 Engaged with outcasts: Jesus spent time with tax collectors, sinners, prostitutes, thieves and the sick.
🥖 Shared meals: Jesus spent time around a table with his disciples, closest friends, and the outcasts mentioned above.
Practice
Which of the 3 habits above from Jesus’ life can you incorporate more into your life right now (individually or with your family)?
Recommended resources 🎙️
📚️ Book on Sabbath Rest: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer.
Reading this book with my wife is what spurred us to study the Sabbath in Scripture and start observing it in our household. And I will tell you…it’s the most refreshing, restful, enjoyable day of our week!
🙏 Books on Prayer: Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence and Praying Like Monks: Living Like Fools by Tyler Staton.
If prayer has ever been a hard habit for you to form, these are great books to read.
🥄 Sermon on Hospitality: Eating is already something you do 3 times a day (hopefully). Inviting others to sit at the table with you is an incredibly practical way to imitate Jesus. Give this sermon a listen and invite someone who doesn’t know Jesus yet to join you for a meal.
Answer key ✅
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29
Have a blessed Thursday ✌️
Best,
Kieran, Isaac & Cam
