CONTEXT 📕
It’s been fun spending time with you in Proverbs 13:22 this week.
Here is a reminder of what we covered this week:
On Monday, we zoomed out.
We explored the context of Proverbs as a book.
More than clever sayings, it’s a divinely inspired collection of wisdom designed to help us live well in God’s good world.
We introduced Proverbs 13:22: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.”
We saw that this is more than a verse about money, but a vision for a long-term, God-honoring legacy.
On Tuesday, we explored the structure of Proverbs 13.
We noticed the repeating contrasts:
Wise vs. foolish
Diligent vs. lazy
Righteous vs. wicked
And we saw that verse 22 fits perfectly into that pattern.
The wise don’t just live for today. They plan, give, and build toward tomorrow (and eternity).
On Wednesday, we zoomed in.
We unpacked the Hebrew word ṭôb — “good.”
Not just morally good. But beneficial, beautiful, and aligned with God’s design.
It’s the same word God used in Genesis when He looked at His creation.
The good person in Proverbs 13:22 isn’t praised because they’re rich.
They’re praised because they lived wisely, generously, and what they built lasted.
They left behind more than just assets.
They left behind fruit.
On Thursday, we made the bridge to Jesus.
And we saw the critical lesson he teaches us:
Money, wealth, and possessions are temporary resources to be used to create eternal impact.
And Jesus didn’t just teach about inheritance.
He lived it and showed us how it’s done.
He gave Himself fully, generously, eternally and invited us into His inheritance as co-heirs.
We ended yesterday’s email with practical ways to:
Pass on a spiritual legacy to your children, grandchildren, or young people God placed in your community
Use your material wealth and possessions for eternal purposes in your lifetime
Leave an inheritance to future generations to do the same
APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃♂️
So what does all this mean for us?
It means that legacy is not a someday thing.
It’s a today thing.
It’s built in the way we talk about money with our spouse. The way we model generosity for our kids. The way we let God shape our budget, our habits, and our heart.
Here are three practical takeaways from this week:
Legacy is intentional. If you haven’t been planning your legacy, start now. Review your habits. Set goals. Begin budgeting with God in mind.
Wisdom is slow and steady. There are no shortcuts. Proverbs teaches that wealth gathered little by little increases. Don’t despise small beginnings; build with patience.
Jesus is your model and your motivation. The most generous person to ever live now lives in you. Let His Spirit guide your spending, giving, and saving. The more you abide in Him, the more your life will bear fruit that outlasts you.
The best way to live a life of legacy is to be held accountable.
If you do anything, send the following text to someone you trust:
“Hey [Name], I’m in a study and really feeling called to be more intentional about the idea of both spiritual and material inheritance. Are you free to talk this week and help me set some goals?”
That single text might change your life.
