MEMORIZE 🧠
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Proverbs 18:10
CONTEXT 📕
The book of Proverbs is part of Israel’s wisdom literature. It was not written to tell one long story to be read in one sitting, but to shape a wise life over time.
These sayings are short, memorable, and meant to be returned to again and again. They train us how to live well in God’s world.
Proverbs 18 sits in a section focused on speech, relationships, pride, and security. Over and over, the chapter contrasts what people trust to protect them with what actually protects them.
Just a few verses earlier, we’re warned about trusting our own words, our own understanding, or our own status.
In other words, wisdom is not found in self-sufficiency, but in humility — in knowing where true safety comes from.
That’s where verse 10 comes in:
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”
Let’s talk towers.
In ancient cities, towers were places of refuge. When danger came in the form of an invading army or a sudden attack, people didn’t stand their ground out in the open.
They ran for cover. They fled to the strongest structure they knew: the tower.
This proverb tells us that God Himself — His name, His character and His presence — is that place of refuge.
Safety is not something we build for ourselves.
It’s actually not something at all….it’s Someone.
A Father who desperately wants His children to be in relationship with Him.
This week, we’ll continue to explore what this means for us in the 21st century.

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃♂
Proverbs 18:10 invites us to sit with the question:
Where do we instinctively run when pressure rises?
Do we run to distraction? Shopping? Unhealthy eating? Work? The approval of others? To our own strength?
Our memory verse doesn’t say the righteous think about the tower. Or admire it from a distance. They run into it.
Today, practice a small act of running to God:
Read Proverbs 18:10 slowly out loud three times.
Speak God’s name out loud: “God (Yahweh), You are my refuge.”
When stress appears today (it will in some form), pause and whisper that phrase, “Yahweh, You are my refuge” before doing anything else.
This week, let’s make this our first instinct rather than our last resort.
🙏 Pray
Father, thank You that You are not distant or fragile, but strong and near. When fear rises and pressure comes, teach me to run to You first. Help me trust Your name — Your character, Your promises, and Your presence — as my true place of safety. Shape my instincts to seek refuge in You. Amen.
