Good morning, {{first_name | everyone}}!
One of my favorite parts of being a follower of Jesus is the blessing of studying God’s Word. Every single word is intentional and today we get to look at three in Proverbs 18:10!
In today’s email…
🤓 Three words that bring depth to our memory verse

The ____ __ the Lord is a ______ ______;
the ________ ___ ____ into it ____ __ ____.
Proverbs 18:10
CONTEXT 📕
Let’s slow down and sit with the words of Proverbs 18:10 in its original language.
1. shem — “name”
In English, a name is often just a label. In Hebrew, shem means far more.
A name represents identity, reputation, character, and revealed nature. To know someone’s name is to know who they are and what they are like.
When Scripture speaks of “the name of the LORD,” it is talking about God Himself — His faithfulness, power, mercy, and presence. Calling on God’s name is not a formula or magic word.
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
In Romans, Paul isn’t talking about “saying God’s name out loud” — he’s referring to a true act of faith and surrender in Yahweh.
2. migdal-ʿoz — “strong tower”
This phrase combines two ideas:
migdal — tower, a raised defensive structure
ʿoz — strength, might, or protection
In the ancient world, towers were not places of comfort. They were last places of safety when a city was under attack. Thick walls. Limited entrances. If you reached the tower, you were protected.
The proverb does not say God gives a tower. It says He is the tower.
As it says in Psalm 46:1, God does not merely offer protection from a distance. His presence itself is the refuge.
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
3. ruts — “runs”
This word means exactly what it sounds like: to flee quickly, to hurry, to rush toward safety. It is an active word - urgent and instinctive.
Godly people do not simply stroll toward God. They don’t wait until every other option fails. They run.
This is especially encouraging for new believers: righteousness is not moral perfection.
It is direction.
It is knowing where to go when danger, fear, and the difficulties of life appear.

In many coastal towns, there are buildings marked clearly with one word: SHELTER.

They aren’t fancy. They aren’t beautiful. And most days, people walk past them without noticing. But when a storm warning is issued — when the wind picks up and the sirens ring — those buildings suddenly matter more than anything else around.
During an emergency, people don’t stop to admire the architecture.
They run.
Early in my walk with Jesus, I misunderstood this. I thought faith meant staying calm. Staying strong. Staying in control.
But over time, I realized that faith looks less like standing in the storm, and more like movement towards shelter.
Today, let’s practice moving towards God.
List 3 things you’re grateful (on your phone or on paper)
List 3 things you are surrendering to God today
🙏 Pray
Father, thank You that You are a safe place when life feels overwhelming. Teach me to run to You quickly and honestly, without hesitation or fear. Form in me the instinct to seek refuge in Your presence. I trust You. Amen.
