Happy Thursday, {{first_name | everyone}}!

This week, we’ve been tracking Proverbs 3:5-6 and its surrounding context — discussing Solomon, what comes to mind when we think of our heavenly Father, and what it means to trust, lean on, and acknowledge him.

Today, we’re looking at why we can trust God with all our hearts.

  • ✝️ Where this call to trust points in the larger story of Scripture

CONTEXT 📕

As we’re considering what it means to “trust in the Lord,” there’s no better example than that of Jesus Christ.

In everything that Jesus did and taught, he became the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).

He walked out our verse in how he lived:

❝

For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

John 12:49-50, emphasis added

Jesus understood that he was sent as the Father’s messenger with a very specific purpose.

He did not try to make up his own success. He obeyed God in every moment.

❝

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Philippians 2:8, emphasis added

When our verse speaks about “he will make straight your paths,” it’s tempting to think this means that all our plans will work out.

But the person who truly trusts God will have a different desire: to align their path with God’s.

To make straight paths means that, as we trust, obey, and acknowledge the Lord, he directs our lives away from sinful and foolish ways and leads us in the right path according to his wisdom and purposes.

And so, to trust in the Lord is to say:

“God’s plan is better and more glorious than anything I can think up for my own life. And I pray that my paths will be whatever he has for me…”

It’s a posture of humility — God is God and I am not.

It’s similar to the posture of a child trusting their parent even when their instructions contradict what the child wants.

In the upside-down way that God’s Kingdom works, the lowly are exalted.

The passage above goes on to say:

❝

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9-11

Jesus died on the cross for sinners (us) and rose again so that everyone who turns from sin and trusts in him can be forgiven, brought back to God, and given eternal life.

Trust requires the recipient to be worthy of trust.

And in Jesus, God proved himself infinitely worthy of our trust.

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂
