😠 Anger Throughout Scripture
Within the first 4 chapters of Scripture, we see anger and the ultimate result it leads to: death.
Read this passage below and consider its connection to our memory verse this week.
3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
God said to Cain that sin’s desire is contrary to you, but that he must “rule over it.”
This is the same Hebrew word (māšal) that we see in our memory verse this week:
Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules (māšal)his spirit than he who takes a city.
Then, later in Scripture, we see Jesus teach this in the Sermon on the Mount:
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment
We also see Paul write about anger in multiple letters to churches and church leaders:
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain.
And of course, this is the verse that popped into mind when you saw that we were memorizing a verse about anger:
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
I’m just scratching the surface when it comes to what Scripture says about anger.
It’s almost as if God knew we would need a lot of counsel and wisdom on the topic…
Wisdom 🧠
“This is a proverb that is constantly quoted, and very little believed.
If men only recognized that there is more valor and heroism in self-control than in doughty deeds which others acclaim in song and story, how different our world would be.”
G. Campbell Morgan
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
God told Cain that he must rule over his anger.
But at times, it can feel like anger rules over us.
So how do we actually overcome anger in our lives?
Tomorrow, we’ll dig into where the power to do this comes from, and how we can take steps to rule over our anger in everyday life.
