Psalm 46:10 opens with a command: “Be still”

It can be easy to read this as ‘sit in one place in silence all day.’

But the original language of this psalm, biblical Hebrew, can help us understand what was meant by this phrase as the authors intended.

The word used in Hebrew for “be still” is rāp̄â - meaning to cease striving.

It carries the idea of relaxing one’s grip, ceasing, or abandoning futile effort.

With yesterday’s context as the backdrop, it’s communicating this: Stop acting as though God’s purposes can be defeated or as though everything depends on your strength. Surrender your resistance and acknowledge His sovereign rule!

Let’s look at two other places in Scripture where this word is used:

The way the term rāp̄â is used in both of these verses tells us that it goes hand-in-hand with God’s holiness.

Did you notice that both verses mention the Lord’s holy temple or dwelling?

It’s not that we quiet down because we know we have to…

We get to let go when we consider who God is.

Discipleship (being a Christian) is not only about obeying commands;
it is about knowing Jesus personally and then following his lead.

In the past few years, my own life has been filled with extended periods of waiting for breakthrough - for a job, for better accommodation, for the adoption process.

One day, I heard someone from church talk about “waiting well” and it struck me:

How can I change my heart’s posture while things are not going my way, or according to my timeline?

I had to learn how to be still (rāp̄â).

This looks like keeping my gaze fixed on who God is and letting go of the control I never had in the first place.

When I look at him, I see that his ways are higher (Isaiah 55:8).

And when I look at him, I see that he can be trusted to finish every good work he started (Philippians 1:6).

Looking at him fills me with faith, so I can loosen my grip and let go.

Changing our understanding of these first two words in our memory verse can have a freeing impact in real life…I’m evidence of it!
