Original Hebrew: Part 2 📖

Let’s look at the second part of our memory verse:

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:26

Rock 🪨

The word translated as ‘rock’ or ‘strength’ is ṣûr emphasizing God's durability and reliability.

A literal translation would be something like:

“God is the rocky summit of my heart and my portion”

For ancient Israelites, land was the most important asset that brought economic stability.

And so Asaph is describing the Lord as a rocky summit - aka somewhere one could go for protection and stability.

Portion 💰️

The Hebrew word translated ‘portion’ or ‘inheritance’ is ḥēleq (pronounced khay'lek).

These days, maybe the word inheritance conjures up images of money and property being passed from one generation to the next.

Abandoned Home

But notice how it’s being used here - ḥēleq is a reference to God himself.

Instead of one’s source of stability, protection and provision being a portion or inheritance of land —

Asaph is declaring that God is his most valuable possession.

Apply & respond: A Simple Practice 🤔

Most of us live in 21st century America where the ‘pursuit of happiness’ means the pursuit of more stuff and making more money.

We especially need to sit in the deep meaning of Asaph’s declaration in Psalm 73:26.

Practice 📖

Take time today to read:

  • Psalm 73 from start to finish

  • The parable of the hidden treasure and the parable of the pearl of great value (Matthew 13:44-46)

💡 Bonus: Read them out loud with your spouse, friends or family.

Wisdom 🧐

When a biblical writer says, “God is my portion,” he means that God is the source of his happiness and blessing.

He is content with all that the Lord is and provides.
