2 Timothy 1:7

On Monday, we met Paul’s last letter, written from prison as he neared the end of his life, sent to Timothy, his spiritual son in the faith, and anchored in the reminder that God had not given him a spirit of fear.

On Tuesday, we looked at what led up to verse 7: Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, through whom God had nurtured a sincere faith in him from childhood, and Paul’s charge to fan into flame the gift of God rather than shrink back from using it.

On Wednesday, we looked at the original Greek.

We learned that dynamis (“power”) is the same word used in Acts 1:8 for the Spirit’s power. Then, we covered how agape (“love”) speaks of a love grounded not in the worthiness of its object, but in the character of the one who loves.

We also learned that sophronismos (“self-control” or “sound mind” in other translations) refers to a disciplined steadiness — a mind governed rightly rather than overtaken by fear.

And on Thursday we watched Jesus display perfect obedience in Gethsemane and on the road to the cross — the ultimate pattern of steadfastness, sacrificial love, and holy resolve.

And for those who belong to Christ, that same Spirit of God now dwells within us.

For those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, this verse is not wishful thinking.

It’s a reminder of what God supplies to His people for the purpose of faithful obedience: power to stand firm, love to endure without bitterness, and self-control to remain steady in the work He has given.

And if you have not yet turned to Christ, then this verse is not yours by default.

God commands all people everywhere to repent and believe the gospel. Jesus Christ is Lord, he died for sinners, and he was raised from the dead.

Those who turn from their sin and trust in him alone will be saved.

This week, ask one person what they believe happens after death. Don’t shrink back in fear.

Remind yourself that God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. So listen well, speak with love, and look for an open door to share the hope of Jesus.

Start one honest gospel conversation and trust God with the outcome. You don’t need perfect words — just a willing heart and faithfulness with the opportunity he gives you.

Father, thank you that you have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. Help me not to shrink back this week, but to speak about Christ with courage, gentleness, and wisdom. Open a door for one honest gospel conversation, and use me to point someone to the hope of Jesus. Amen.
