On Monday, we met Moses on the edge of the Promised Land, preaching his final sermons to a new generation.

His great fear wasn’t military enemies but rather that a comfortable people would forget the God who saved them. Deuteronomy 6:7 is his answer: hand the faith down on purpose, or watch it fade.

On Tuesday, we saw where teaching begins. Before “teach them diligently to your children” comes “these words… shall be on your heart” (6:6). You can’t give what you don’t have. The words have to live in us first, which is why memorizing this verse is itself part of the work.

On Wednesday, we opened the Hebrew behind “teach diligently,” shanan, “to sharpen.” It’s the slow, repeated work of engraving God’s words into a life, in the four ordinary times: when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise.

And on Thursday, we hit the wall inside the command and found the gospel behind it. Only God can circumcise a heart (Deuteronomy 30:6), so he promised to write his law on us himself (Jeremiah 31:33).

Jesus sealed that new covenant in his blood and kept the Shema perfectly in our place.

So the pressure is off, and the calling is on. We can’t manufacture anyone’s faith.

But we can faithfully hand down what we were given, and trust God to do the deep work in the heart.

💪 Challenge

This weekend, pick one young person, your child, a grandchild, a niece or nephew, a younger believer at church, and take one ordinary moment to share something true from God’s Word. Maybe it’s a comment in the car, a sentence at dinner, or a prayer at bedtime.

Father, thank you for putting your words within reach of me and everyone I love. Give me courage to speak of you in the small moments this weekend. Use what I hand down, and set the next generation’s hope in you. Amen.
