Happy Tuesday, {{first_name| everyone}}!

Today we’ll look a few verses back and discover what it means to “sow to the Spirit”…

I grew up in the church, but I never really understood who the Holy Spirit was. Now I know him as someone who helps me understand the things of God.

If you missed yesterday’s email, you can read it here.

In today’s email…

  • 🌾 What Paul says right before verse 9, and why it matters

  • 🌱 A passage to read and one question to sit with

  • 📊 A trivia question from the far end of Galatians 6

MEMORIZE 🧠

And let us not grow _____ of doing ____, for in due ______ we will ____, if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

CONTEXT 📕

Let’s look at the verses leading up to our memory verse this week:

❝

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:7-9, emphasis added

When we hear that we reap what we sow, it can sometimes feel heavy. We know our choices matter, and we know sin has real consequences.

So we may begin to hear this passage as a command to fix ourselves:

  • Just be better

  • Do something to make it right

  • Fix it by yourself

But Jesus never made it about self-effort.

No — he reminds us we have a helper:

❝

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:23, 25-26, emphasis added

And just one chapter before our memory verse (so, in Galatians 5), Paul describes one of the most well-known things about the Holy Spirit: the fruit of the Spirit,

e.g. love, joy, peace, patience...

My husband and I recently visited the fruit farm where I grew up, and my dad showed us the early pears budding on the branches.

Jesus uses that same picture in John 15.

A branch cannot bear fruit by itself. It must remain in the vine.

In the same way, we cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit apart from Christ — through prayer, his Word and obedience.

The call to sow to the Spirit is not, “Save yourself.”

Instead, it’s, “Stay rooted in Christ, walk by His Spirit, and do not give up.”

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

📖 Read: Galatians 6:1-10

Highlight or underline all the fruit of the Spirit you can find in this passage.

Love | Joy | Peace | Patience | Kindness | Goodness | Faithfulness | Humility | Self-control

👂️ Reflect:

How can I “sow to the Spirit” today?

🙏 Pray

Father, thank you for being the vine that I can abide in all my days. Give me bread for today, Lord — I just want to be near to you today. As I go about my normal day, gently turn my attention towards you, over and over. Amen.
