Today, we’re slowing down to look at two Hebrew words that open up the whole verse. Let’s nerd out a bit!

Genesis 1:27

The meat of the verse hinges on two Hebrew words, and both are worth a closer look.

The first is tselem (TSEH-lem), translated "image."

Elsewhere in the Old Testament the same word is used to refer to a physical statue or idol, a carved figure set up to represent someone.

When God makes humanity in his tselem, he makes us his representatives. We carry his authority on the ground and reflect who he is to the rest of creation.

Here's the part a first hearer would have caught that we miss.

In the ancient world, rulers often used statues or images to signify their authority in places under their dominion.

Against that backdrop, Genesis 1 presents all of humanity — not just kings — as uniquely created in the image of God and commissioned to exercise dominion under Him.

Genesis takes a normally royal privilege and hands it to everyone. Every person, powerful or not, bears God's image.

The second word is demut (deh-MOOT), “likeness,” which Genesis pairs with tselem in verse 26.

The two terms work together to make one point clear: humanity was made to reflect God and to represent him in the world.

Not because we are divine, but because He created us to bear His image.

You and I were made to represent God here on earth, and so was every person you meet.

That is a God-given dignity you did not earn and that sin does not erase.

I see this commonly in young teenage relationships: one or both people in the relationship find their ultimate significance and purpose in the other person. And inevitably, when the relationship ends, their whole world comes crumbling down.

No human could possibly provide you that deep sense of meaning, significance and worth. Only God can do that. Which means the significance we sometimes chase is something other people were never actually qualified to give us.

🤔 Reflect: Where are you still auditioning for love, approval, or acceptance from people?

🏃 Act: Name that one place today. Then hand it back to God, and choose to rest in the worth he already gave you instead of performing for the worth others might.

🙏 Pray

Father, you made me to carry your image, and you already call me yours. Show me where I keep begging people for what you've freely given. Help me lay that down today and rest in the worth that came from you, not from them. Amen.
