CONTEXT 📕

Today, we’re looking at three words in Lamentations 3:22–23 that describe the character of God and explain why the writer is still able to hope even in the midst of great suffering.

1. ḥeseḏ (pronounced HEH-sed) — “steadfast love”

If you’ve been with us for a while, you might recognize this one. Hesed refers to covenant love: loyal, faithful, and committed love that does not give up on people.

It’s a love that remains constant even when circumstances are painful or confusing.

Even in Lamentations (a book filled with grief and judgment), the writer recognizes that God’s loyal love has not disappeared.

God’s people may feel abandoned, but God’s character has not changed and he will continue to love them despite their unfaithfulness.

2. raḥămîm (pronounced rah-khah-MEEM) — “mercies”

This word meaning “mercies” comes from a Hebrew root connected to the concepts of compassion and tender care. It’s often associated with feelings of a parent for a child.

This word emphasizes God’s fatherly compassion toward his children in weakness, suffering, and failure. In other words, God’s compassion is not exhausted by human failure. His mercies are continually renewed and never ending.

3. ʾĕmûnâ (pronounced eh-moo-NAH) — “faithfulness”

Emuna refers to firmness, reliability, trustworthiness, and steadiness. It describes someone who can be depended on completely.

And in the middle of the uncertainty of Lamentation’s situation, this word becomes the rock solid foundation of hope.

Circumstances had changed dramatically for Judah. Jerusalem was destroyed, people were grieving, and the future felt bleak. Yet the writer declares that God remains dependable.

God’s faithfulness does not change with circumstances. He remains trustworthy even when his people cannot yet see what he is doing.

Together, these three words (ḥeseḏ, raḥămîm, and ʾĕmûnâ) form the heart of hope in Lamentations 3.

God’s steadfast love continues.
His mercies are renewed daily.
His faithfulness is unaffected by circumstances.

And that is why we can still hope even in the middle of lament.

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

When life feels uncertain or discouraging, Lamentations 3 reminds us that hope is rooted not in changing circumstances, but in God’s unchanging character.

His steadfast love, mercies, and faithfulness assure us that he can still be trusted even when we cannot yet see what he is doing.

Reflect 🤔

Where in your life right now are you waiting for circumstances to change before you feel hopeful again?

Sit with that honestly. Then read Lamentations 3:22–23 slowly. Let those words land as a statement about who God is today, in the middle of whatever you're experiencing.

Pray 🙏

Lord, help me anchor my hope in your steadfast love, mercies, and faithfulness. Teach me to trust you even when I cannot yet see your plans. Renew my heart each day and help me reflect your compassion to others. Amen.
