Here’s a review of where we’ve been this week:

On Monday, we set the scene. Jesus taught this parable (alongside two other parables) on the Mount of Olives, days before the cross. He was showing his disciples how to live in the stretch of time between his leaving and his eventual return.

That setting matters, because it means this parable is about how we are to live right now, while the Master is away.

On Tuesday, we stepped into the story. Two servants invested what they were given and heard “well done.” The third servant buried his out of fear and was called “wicked and slothful.” We learned that slothfulness is not simply laziness, but also an unwillingness to use what the Master gave you for his purposes.

On Wednesday, we found out what one “talent” was worth: roughly twenty years’ wages! That means the “little” the servant was faithful over was actually a fortune.

The point? No one in the story (and no one reading this), was handed nothing to steward. We all have been given things to steward.

On Thursday, we looked at Jesus as the one truly good and faithful Servant, who buried nothing and obeyed to the point of the cross.

The joy the master offers points to the joy Christ secured.

And through the Holy Spirit, God is making us increasingly more faithful.

You’ve spent five days with a verse about not burying what God gave you. Don’t let the week end with a shovel in your hand.

Pick one person this week and invest something the master has given you in them.

Spend an afternoon with someone lonely. Give money you would rather keep. Share the gospel with the friend who needs good news.

Choose the person and act, knowing that the master is coming back.

🙏 Pray

Father, I don’t want to stand before you one day holding a life I kept safe and buried. Thank you that in Jesus I already stand accepted before you, righteous in him. Now free me to invest what you have given, starting this weekend. In Jesus’ name, amen.
