Mark 10:45

On Monday, we saw that Mark 10:45 is the hinge of Mark's Gospel. While the disciples were concerned about thrones, Jesus was walking toward a cross, and he called that pattern the real shape of greatness.

That should reframe every ambition we carry.

On Tuesday, we watched James and John ask for the best seats, and Jesus answer by redefining greatness as sacrificial service.

That's the kind of greatness that gets tested at home, in the ordinary moments most people can’t see, which is where many of us (myself included) find out how much we still expect to be served.

On Wednesday, we studied two Greek words: lytron, the ransom price that frees a captive, and tetelestai, Jesus' last word from the cross that means "It is finished," a word sometimes stamped on invoices in the ancient world when they were fully paid.

Together they teach us that the debt for our sin is completely settled, so we do not need to live as if we need to earn God’s forgiveness and love.

And on Thursday, we traced the word "ransom" from the Passover lamb, to Isaiah's suffering servant, to Christ himself — one cohesive rescue story running all through Scripture and paid for with God’s own blood.

It cost God the life of his own son to redeem us from the snare of sin. And that is good news worth sharing with others!

Jesus served us all the way to the cross, and then he invited us to follow him and imitate his pattern.

This weekend, look for one chance to serve someone at real cost to yourself: a chore, an errand, an encouragement, something that helps them and inconveniences you. Consider asking a friend or your small group to do it with you, so you can spur each other on.

Offer it to God as an act of worship.

🙏 Pray

Lord, thank you for loving and serving me all the way to the cross when I had nothing to offer you. Give me a heart like yours, glad to serve even when it costs me and no one notices. When I want to guard my comfort, remind me of the ransom you paid. Amen.
