How One Page of Scripture Changed a Life

Edwin was 15, tending his family's goats in Namibia, when he found a torn page on the ground outside his house.

It had come from his grandfather's Bible: Matthew 10:34–39, written in Otjiherero, Edwin's heart language. He read it on the walk to the field. Then he read it again.

"When I came home, I realized everything had changed with me," he says.

Soon his whole family was gathering each evening to read Scripture and pray. At school, classmates and teachers started calling him the school pastor.

Today, Edwin is a Bible translator. He's working so his mother's people, the Himba, can one day read God's Word in their own language too.

One page of the Bible changed Edwin's life.

But right now, over 37 million people across 543 languages don't even have a single verse in their native tongue.

By partnering with local leaders like Edwin, Seed Company is working to change that and make all of Scripture available, for all people.

CONTEXT 📕

This week, our discovery of Psalm 96:3 grew day by day:

On Monday we entered this verse and the world of the intended audience - where all kinds of gods and idols were worshipped in the nations surrounding the Israelites.

While much of the world we live in today is secular, this Psalm still teaches us how to declare God’s glory in our own context, filled with faith and hope.

Tuesday took us deeper into the chapter as a whole and all the way back to Genesis.

We discovered why the Gospel is good news, what it means to relate to God as our Creator, and where we find our purpose: To make His name great in all the earth.

Wednesday meant it was time to look at the original language.

Our testimony is more like telling (sāp̄ar) a real story about what happened and less like declaring something obscure. We also learned the meaning of “all” (kōl) which led to…

Thursday, where we discovered the Good News is for every nation.

We looked at God’s particular call on Abraham and the Israelites and how that extended to include other nations, tribes, and tongues.

The Great Commission of Jesus sends us to make disciples of all peoples so that his Kingdom may permeate the entire earth.

Looking back at this week and contemplating how to be a witness in my own life, it reminds me of this beautiful passage called the Shema:

❝

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Although this verse talks about the Ten Commandments, I believe it also offers a way to live out our personal testimonies and the Gospel.

May the glory and marvelous works we declare become part of who we are and seep into everything we do, so that all nations and all peoples can come to know him.

APPLY AND RESPOND 🏃‍♂

💪 Challenge

Based on what you learned this week, take up your own challenge from the list below (whichever one stands out to you):

  • I will live in such a way that people see Jesus in me.

  • I will share a testimony around the dinner table.

  • I will declare God’s glory among my friends and family.

🙏 Pray

Father, you are glorious. When I consider what you’ve done for me and who you are, I cannot help but be filled with joy overflowing. Please enable me to be a witness of your great love. Amen.

Psalm 96:3

Thank you for spending another week in God’s Word with us. As you open your Bible each day, remember how blessed we are to have such ready access to God’s Word.

Lift up the people around the world who do not yet have a Bible in their native language, and consider supporting the efforts of those — like Seed Company — who are working to change that.

Have a blessed weekend!

Best,

The Malachi Daily team 🙏
